Building Inspections

The City of Maple Plain contracts its Building Inspection Services with METRO WEST INSPECTION SERVICES, INC. of Loretto, Minnesota.

Department Responsibilities

The Building Inspection Department is responsible for the application and enforcement of the building codes and related ordinances regulating construction, alterations and the use of buildings within the city.


A complete building permit application is required for any type of construction or improvement to a building. The City of Maple Plain requires that a permit be approved by the city inspector before any work commences.

A building permit is required for ALL of the following:

  • New Home
  • Garage/Accessory Building
  • Addition
  • Porch
  • Deck
  • Finish Basement
  • Remodel
  • Swimming Pool
  • Re-roof
  • Re-side
  • Window replacement
  • Heating/Furnace Replacement
  • Air Conditioning (central)
  • Gas Fireplace
  • Sprinkler System
  • Fence
  • Demolition
  • Permit Signage (Sign permit also required)


Dependent on the type of permit, the permit fees will either be a fixed fee or a fee based on valuation. Fees are listed in the Fee Schedule (PDF) . Fixed fee permits cost $100 plus a $1 state surcharge. Valuation permits are based on the 1997 Uniform Building Code Fee Schedule + 15%. Fixed Fee

The following residential permits and commercial permits if project value is less than $2,500 cost $100 plus a $1 state surcharge.

    • Windows & Doors (if using current opening and making no size changes)

    • 1-5 Fixtures (each additional $10)
    • Water Heater
    • Water Softener
    • Lawn Irrigation
  • Mechanical
    • Duct Work
    • Furnace
    • Air Conditioning
    • Fireplace
    • New Gas Line
  • Demolition (Residential)

*Demolition costs $200 for Commercial Buildings and $500 for Industrial Buildings


All types of permits not listed under the fixed fee category are valuation permits. This including permits for construction, alteration, commercial plumbing and mechanical, and permanent signage.  A $100 application fee is required before the application will be reviewed by the Building Official.

Electrical Inspections
