This book is dedicated to the courageous and stalwart pioneers who settled in Independence and founded the town of Maple Plain and to the citizens who perpetuated that founding in a pattern of steady growth and prosperity.
The book is published in 1968 through the efforts of the Maple Plain Garden Club, one hundred years after the village plat was laid out in 1868. The inspiration for it was a valuable record left by our charter member, Miss Amanda Johnson, our town librarian from 1923 to 1959.
As many people as possible have been included. If any have been missed, be assured it was not intentional. Dates and events have been carefully checked with records of the Hennepin County Historical Society and other reliable sources.
We wish to thank all who have helped in any way and especially Avery Stubbs for his helpfulness and interest.
